Overview

In this lesson, we use patterns and real-world situations to make sense of multiplying and dividing positive and negative numbers. Most of today’s learning happens by doing math.

Learning Targets

  • Multiply and divide positive and negative integers accurately
  • Use patterns to predict the sign of an answer
  • Explain what answers mean using context

Key Vocabulary

  • Integer — A positive or negative whole number, including zero
  • Multiply — Combine equal groups or represent repeated change
  • Divide — Split a quantity into equal parts or undo multiplication
  • Product — The result of multiplication
  • Quotient — The result of division
  • Sign — The positive (+) or negative (–) symbol of a number
  • Context — The real-world situation that gives meaning to a problem

Lesson Flow

Warm-Up

  • KenKen puzzles using all four operations
  • Focus on reasoning, patterns, and accuracy

Group Work

  • Work through Green, Blue, and Black problems in groups
  • All work is done on whiteboards
  • Be ready to explain your thinking

Practice

  • Record final answers and key ideas in your notes
  • Focus on why answers make sense, not just the calculation

Wrap Up

  • Quick check-in on sign patterns
  • Reflection on which contexts helped most

Green • Blue • Black Practice

Practice questions are grouped into Green, Blue, and Black levels. These levels are about challenge, not speed.

  • Green — Core skills everyone is expected to complete
  • Blue — Shows proficiency through reasoning and interpretation
  • Black — Extends your thinking and requires justification

Start with Green, move to Blue, and try Black when you are ready. You may move between levels as needed.

How We Take Notes in Math 8

Most problems today are worked on whiteboards. Your notes should capture what matters.

  • The situation or context
  • The operation you chose
  • Why the sign of your answer makes sense

If the work is on the board, your notes should still show your thinking.

Use solutions to check your understanding — not to copy answers.

Next Up

In Lesson 1.4, we will combine all integer operations and work with multi-step expressions.
